Swimming pool sponsored by GSL to come up in Vasco soon: Carlos

VASCO: Cleanliness drives were held in various parts of Mormugao taluka on Sunday to observe the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

As part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the Mormugao municipal council in collaboration with the educational institutions and Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida organised cleanliness drive in Mormugao, Vasco and Dabolim constituencies which comes under the jurisdiction of MMC.

The cleanliness drive was kicked off by Vasco MLA Almeida opposite MMC building in the morning. Cleanliness programmes were organised in the municipal wards from Vasco and Dabolim constituencies with the active participation of respective ward councillors, schools students and people, giving a message to ‘Keep Vasco clean and green”. Nearly 4,000 students of various schools participated in the cleanliness drive.

Vasco MLA Almeida announced a cash prize of Rs 25,000 to the cleanest ward which will be presented to the ward councillor. The MMC has provided JCB machines, trucks and other equipments to lift garbage, mud, construction material dumped in various localities.

Almeida disclosed that the port town would soon get a swimming pool which will be sponsored by Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL). He said that a barren field located next to Hotel Taniya will be an identical site for the project.

The Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) also held a cleanliness drive on Sunday. The chairman and managing director GSL Rear Admiral (Retd) Shekhar Mital, director (operations) S P Raikar, besides other officials and staff of GSL participated in the Swachh Bharat campaign which was held from MMC building to Dabolim airport junction.

Cortalim Yuva Morcha and Mahila Morcha along with Minister for Science and Technology Alina Saldanha conducted the cleanliness drive. The drive was held in areas of Cortalim, Sancoale, Velsao and Cansaulim villages. Special attention was also provided in Zuarinagar and Birla slum areas.

The Dabolim Block Congress Committee also held cleanliness drives at various places with the support of Lions Club of Chicalim, Reliance Aviation, Bharat Petroleum Aviation, students teachers and parents of Regina Mundi School, Keshav Smruti School and Keshav Smruti Higher Secondary School, Narayan Bandekar Bhavan’s School, Naval Children School, Kid Zee School Chicalim and Dabolim, members of Lions Club of Chicalim-Bogmalo and Palloti Home Boys.
