PANAJI: Crime Branch police has filed a chargesheet against Vinayak Karbotkar in the Ashpaq Bengre murder case before a court in Mapusa on Thursday. Karbotkar has been charged for murder, destruction of evidence and assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty.
In the 290 page chargesheet police have relied upon 40 witnesses. Out of the 40 witnesses, statements of 10 witnesses were recorded before a magistrate under 164 CrPC. According to police these 10 witnesses had reportedly witnessed the crime.
In July this year notorious criminal Bengre was attacked by another criminal Karbotkar with a sharp weapon on his head, neck and other parts of the body in the central jail Colvale. Both, the deceased and the accused were under-trial prisoners at the jail.
The fatal attack was recorded on the jail’s CCTV camera. The footage wherein commission of crime is recorded (CCTV camera) has also been submitted to the court as evidence in the case. The case was investigated by police inspector Dattaguru Sawant.
Police probe revealed that the accused Karbotkar over a previous enmity intentionally stabbed Bengre with a knife at various parts of the body resulting in his death. The accused had also assaulted Satish Naik, guard of Central Jail Colvale with a knife who tried to rescue deceased Bengre.
Investigation had also revealed the negligence of central jail Colvale staff as the accused Karbotkar was left free after committing the offence. He was allowed to proceed towards the mess from the under-trial block, he was not isolated and thereafter kept in the cell along with more than 47 other inmates which facilitated him to conceal the clothes and the knife, police probe had revealed. In this connection the Goa prison authority had suspended four jail personnel.
