Trust is ready for vigilance probe, says Azrencar

MARGAO: The treasurer of the South Goa Welfare Trust for Animals Sandip Azrencar said that the trust is ready for vigilance probe into the grants received from Margao Municipal Council.

Azrencar said that more funds are required to increase the cage capacity so as to take care of the animals impounded.

Addressing a press conference, on Thursday, he said that the trust receives a monthly grant of Rs 40,000 and reimbursement of actual fuel bills from the MMC whereas the actual monthly operation costs around Rs 70,000. The deficits are met through donations from the well wishers, he added.

He further said that the allegations are baseless, and are politically motivated. He said that the Fatorda MLA and president of SGWTA Vijai Sardesai has donated Rs 1.5 lakh over a period of 15 months, adding he had joined the group during the term of the previous council.

He said that the monthly grants have been eventually revised since 2009 after the trust  entered into an MoU with the council during the term of Savio Coutinho, and ruled out any favouritism or illegality. He said that despite limited number of cages, the trust maintains the annual target of 1200 sterilisations per annum.
