PANAJI: The city Mayor Surendra Furtado on Wednesday said that the workers of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) just cannot proceed on strike from November 17, as they have not given the mandatory 14-day strike notice to the Corporation.
It may be recalled that the CCP workers have threatened to go on strike in support of their demands as regards medical allowance and uniform allowance, among other things. The strike is timed with the forthcoming International Film Festival of India 2016, which is slated to be inaugurated on November 20. The CCP workers clear most of the garbage generated at all the film festival venues.
Furtado said that the CCP continues to struggle, for receiving its dues from the government under the 6th Pay Commission, without any success. “We are still receiving from the directorate of municipal administration grants linked to the 5th Pay Commission,” he added, stating that the Corporation is facing tough time to pay salary to its staff.
Incidentally, the Corporation has not received salary grants from the government amounting to Rs 13.46 crore, for the period 2010-2015 from successive governments, which has impacted development projects in the capital city.
Speaking further, the Mayor appealed to the residents of the city to pay their arrears towards house tax, trade licences and board licences at the earliest. “The CCP is still accepting such payments in cash, through the now-defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination currency notes,” he informed, revealing that as on today there exists such Rs 6 crore to Rs 7 crore arrears.
