An occupant of a Maruti 800 car, Rocky D’Cunha (71), from Quepem, died in an accident that occurred at Verna junction in the wee hours of Wednesday.
As per available information from Verna police, the accident took place at around 5.30 a.m when the Maruti 800 car was heading towards Panaji from Margao. When it reached at Verna junction, it collided with a Maruti AStar car which was coming towards the NH17, the police said. The impact of the collision was such that D’Cunha, who was seated next to the person driving the car, sustained grievous injuries and died on his way to Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital, Bambolim.
The other four occupants of the Maruti 800 car also sustained injuries and were immediately shifted to the GMC Hospital for treatment. They were on their way to Old Goa for the novena of St Francis Xavier.
Verna police have registered an offence against the driver of the Maruti A Star car, identified as Mayur Naik, for rash and negligent driving and having been responsible for a death in the mishap. He has been booked under Sections 337, 358, 279, 304 (A) of Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police sub-inspector Raghoba Kamat is further investigating the case under the supervision of PI Shailesh Narvekar.
