Long queues were seen at the Central Bank, Raia from where people had to return empty-handed as ATMs quickly ran out of money. Account holders had to wait for hours for cash to arrive from the head office on Wednesday.
The situation made several people to get restless. While some questioned the officials at the counter, others were seen accusing the decision makers of the country.
A lady waiting in the queue said, “I wanted to pay my labourers as construction work is going on at my house. I have no cash with me”.
What was more disturbing was that the account holders were not informed that the cash had been exhausted.
A senior citizen John Pereira said, “This is happening for the last few days as sometimes the ATM machine malfunctions. We have to stand in queue for long hours and when we reach the counter we are informed that there is no cash”.
A senior Bank official said, “We get 60 percent cash for our daily requirements. This has created a lot of problems for us. Customers vent their ire on us when we have no cash to disburse. We are working overtime to help, assist and satisfy our customers,’’ the bank official stated.
Sources in the bank informed that the head office distributes cash to 30 branches each day with security cover, hence there has been a delay in disbursing cash.
