The Nuvem-Dongrim culvert is in a precarious condition and faces risk of collapse due to poor maintenance. Its urgent repairs can save the structure from giving way, said locals from the area.
“The culvert is on the verge of collapse. If it is not repaired soon it will fall apart in the monsoon,” said Jose Fernandes, resident.
Another resident of Dongrim said that he had even met the local MLA Francisco Xavier Pacheco (Mickky) expressing concern over the condition of the culvert on vehicles also ply, but till date nothing has happened.
“I told the MLA about the situation. Every year during monsoon, the culvert gets inundated and we cannot use it. The height of the culvert has to be increased,” he said.
When contacted the local MLA Pacheco, he said the government had floated tenders for construction of a new culvert, but there were no bidders for it.
“I will follow it up. However, it has been brought to my notice that due to sluice gates the water accumulates and the pressure falls on the culvert, thereby weakening it,” he added.
