In a swift action, the police on Monday arrested at Panvel, Maharashtra, the African who had been booked for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 39-year-old local woman at Parra in Bardez taluka on Saturday.
The Mapusa police in association with the Mumbai railway police arrested the fleeing Nigerian at the Panvel railway station. The woman was riding towards Alva Mara open hall, Parra, on her bike on Saturday evening. She was waved down by two Nigerians. When she halted one of the two men forcefully sat on her bike asking her at the knifepoint to travel to his room. The frightened woman rode to his room at Assagao where the Nigerian allegedly raped her.
Acting on the complaint from the woman, the Mapusa police had registered an offence and conducted panchanama under sections 365, 506, 342, 376 of the Indian Penal Code. The rape accused has been identified as Kenneth Upwegha (41).
Reliable sources had informed the police that Upwegha had left for Mumbai. Accordingly, a team of the Mapusa police led by PSI Alvito Rodrigues, and comprising head constable Ravi Gawas, police constables Alvito De Mello, Irshad Vatangi and Rajesh Kandolkar was sent to that city. Details of the case were also shared with the Mumbai railway police. On Monday, the Mapusa police in association with the Mumbai railway police arrested the fleeing accused. Upwegha will be brought to the state on Tuesday and will be produced before the Mapusa JMFC.
