MARGAO: The people living around Margao’s dumpsite are poised for a big relief. Segregation of the waste dumped at Sonsoddo over the years will begin from Tuesday as a state-of-the-art machine was brought at the dumpsite on Monday for the purpose.
The huge machine, which reached at the site on Monday afternoon, has been provided by the GSIDC and will segregate all kind of garbage automatically when the waste will be put into the machine.
A trial run was successful conducted on Monday evening by machine operators in the presence of TCP Minister Vijay Sardesai, MMC chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai, municipal engineers, the MMC chief officer and a few councillors.
“For the first time the segregation of the waste will start. There are two ‘hills’ of waste at the site. We want to clear the dump to save the land. The works will start from Tuesday. Here is a government that delivers what it promises,’’ Sardesai said after his visit to Sonsoddo in the evening.
Stating that waste segregation would be done through a computerised system, MMC sources said the machine is expected to segregate and clear at least 40 to 50 tonne of waste everyday. The segregated waste will then be lifted from the dumpsite.
On March 21, Sardesai had visited the Sonsoddo site promising to clear off the mountainous waste through bioremediation process.
Presently, the Fomento Green, which had signed an MoU with the MMC to set up the solid waste management plant at Sonsoddo, handles the waste generated in Margao.
But the plant is yet to be fully operative.
