Three fake currency-counting machines were seized from a building in Margao by a team of Legal Metrology office, Margao led by the assistant controller Arun Panchwadkar on Wednesday.
Panchwadkar said that the raid was conducted following a complaint by Roland Martins of GOACAN. He said that that the Legal Metrology office will take necessary action against the culprit after registering a complaint.
He said, “We raided three fake currency-counting machines in Margao. We got information that such fake machines were also used by the Margao post office but before we reached there, the machines were removed from the treasury section.”
Panchawadkar said his counterparts in Panaji and Mapusa had also raided such fake currency-counting machines on Tuesday. He said that as per the complainant, the machines used to show all notes as genuine and the counting was also incorrect. The complainant later told media persons that the machines were manufactured, packed and sold in Santa Cruz. There is no warranty or the user manual. A machine was sold for Rs 11,000 even though MRP is Rs 18,000.
Sources in the Margao Legal Metrology office said that a big racket could be involved as such machines are also in use in cooperative societies, superstores and malls.
