MARGAO
Sr Escaline Miranda, state coordinator of National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM), on Monday, criticised the state government for not recognising the domestic work as dignified work, according to the International Labour Organisation guidelines and for failing to bring domestic work under the schedule of employment. Sr Miranda was speaking at the programme organised by NDWM at Margao.
The workers took out a rally, which went around the Margao municipal garden, and then culminated at the garden.
“In Goa, workers are treated as slaves. Goa is the only state which has not introduced it. All the states have recognised the domestic work as the dignified work and hence all the facilities, which contract labourers get should be passed on to these domestic workers,” she said, lamenting further that Goa government is not serious on the issue.
Dr Sabrina Martins of Bailamcho Saad pointed out that many a times women workers are ill-treated.
“There has to be a social security board (SSB) under the Unorganised Workers Social Security Act 2008 or separate welfare board for the domestic workers. If the government paid no heed to our demands, we would positively take some harsh steps,” she added.
Fr Eremito Rebello said the people (workers) are still fighting for justice.
“Atrocities against the workers increase every day. The cases of violence are being reported in hospitals,” he said appealing to the government to give humane treatment to the workers.
