Tightening its screws on mining companies over pollution, the Goa State Pollution Control Board has decided to continue monitoring the measures being taken by the mining companies to control pollution in Sonshi village in Sattari taluka. The board has refrained from renewing the ‘consent to operate’ for the mining firms.
A board meeting was held on Friday at Secretariat to review whether the mining companies have taken more measures to reduce pollution at Sonshi.
The GSPCB has decided not to renew the ‘consent to operate’ for the mining companies until they resolve the issue of dust pollution.
Some mining firms have submitted a plan on short-term measures to control pollution, which has spiked due to mining activities.
Sources said that some companies have informed the board that they have been in the process of taking measures to reduce the pollution.
The meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma, has decided to hold another meeting on the same issue on
May 13.
The board has asked the companies to comply with the report as regards the pollution.
