Sirsaim residents have expressed concern over overflowing septic tank at Thivim railway station and claim that despite informing various officials about it no steps have come forth to fix the problem.

The aggrieved villagers are basically the taxi drivers among others who operate outside the Thivim railway station, who face problems owing to unhygienic conditions that result out of the overflowing sewage. They have also expressed fear over outbreak of diseases due to it being the monsoon season.

The locals claimed that the septic tank is of the station and since it has been kept open it is overflowing and the sewage goes into the drains, causing a health hazard. They said that they also have to put up with foul smell that emanates from the sewage.

A taxi operator Satish Shetye said that “the overflowing filthy water can become an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes; hence, the railway authorities should take note of it and resolve it at the earliest.”

He claimed said that “they had raised the issue before the railway authority, health officials, panchayat, but nothing has happened till date.”  Another taxi operator said that “they have been facing this problem for a long time and on various occasions we had informed the railway authority who assured us of taking up renovation work but in vain.”

When contacted sarpanch of Sirsaim village Anand Temkar, he stated that “we, on various occasions, had raised this issue with the railway authority as regards the septic tank and overflowing sewage into drains, which is not only leading to foul smell but can also create an ideal situation for mosquito-breeding.”

“Now, again we requested the railway authority to take action immediately and resolve the problem in the larger interest of the villagers,” added Temkar.

When contacted public relations officer of Konkan railway Baban Ghatge, he informed that he will check with his officials. When asked about pending renovation work of the station, he replied that “after monsoon the work is expected to start.”
