Aldona Congress block alongwith villagers of Aldona constituency, on Friday, gheraoed assistant engineer of electricity department demanding assurance that the villagers will not face problems of power outage henceforth. A delegation led by North Goa district Congress president Amarnath Panjikar warned that if the villagers continue to face hardships then they will be compelled to hold a morcha.
For the past few days, the residents have been facing problems due to irregular power supply in the constituency. The villagers claimed that due to constant power fluctuations the household electrical appliances got damaged and similarly, small-time businesses in the villages have also faced the brunt, thereby those dealing with items that need refrigeration suffering losses. Educational and banking institutions have also been putting up with the situation.
On Friday, the delegation led by Panjikar and other office bearers and locals gheraoed the assistant engineer A Chandran and demanded that the department should take up periodical and regular maintenance of power poles and lines so that the tax payers do not suffer unnecessarily.
A local Jose Rose brought to the notice of the assistant engineer that due to power cuts and improper functioning of streetlights a person had to lose his life as in heavy rains he could not see properly on the road while riding at Olaulim.
He further highlighted that the new LED bulbs which are put on the streetlights along the road in Ucasaim, Olaulim are like ‘spotlights’ which are used in tiatr shows, which do not glow widespread.
Panjikar said that “Calvim bridge plunges into darkness at night and no authority is doing anything about it; similarly, even the Ram temple in Pomburpa lacks lighting facility.”
After hearing the grievances, assistant engineer Chandran told the delegation that “this situation is not a regular phenomenon; there was a fault in the main line coming from Thivim to Nachinola due to which there were power cuts.” He assured that he will look into the various issues brought to his notice.
