Power Minister Milind Naik has said that underground cabling is the only solution to the perennial problem of power supply cuts encountered by people during monsoon all over the state.
Speaking to media in his office at Headland-Sada, Naik disclosed that the power department is receiving several complaints about power supply disruptions from across the state. He also said that most often power supply interruptions are caused during first showers when the insulator on electric pole develops hairline cracks due to heat as rainwater enters inside. He also cited problems like uprooted trees snapping overhead power wires, which happens mostly during monsoon.
Naik claimed that the power department ensures uninterrupted power supply during summer and winter seasons but in rainy seasons, natural forces sometimes get the better of their staff. He opined that the power department has made best efforts to provide uninterrupted power supply to the people all over the state during the last four years. He maintained that the power situation has improved now.
Naik claimed that basically, complaints about power interruptions start in the month of April and May when there are unseasonal rains but after that the situation improves and rarely are complaints received from people. He disclosed that the estimated cost of underground cabling all over the state is Rs 20,000 crore adding, work has been started in around four to five constituencies and work in other areas will also be taken up. He said that the government has spent around Rs 1,500 crore for the purpose of underground cabling works in the state.
