Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar on Tuesday criticised the state police for the delay in nabbing the accused in the alleged rape case of a Russian tourist in Morjim by the hotel owner.
Stating that the police are sometimes reluctant in taking immediate action in certain cases, Parulekar said that the home department needs to be more vigilant. “In some cases the police are reluctant and they need to be dealt with strictly. As a part of the government and as Tourism Minister, I will move a note to the home department and deal with them strictly from my side”, he added.
He further said that the name of the state gets tainted with such incidents and the home department needs to be more vigilant. “It is a shameful incident”, he stated.
Stating that this affects the state’s image as a tourist destination, Parulekar further said that by moving a note to the home department he will demand to expedite the enquiry and take the necessary steps in the case.
Parulekar was reacting to the alleged rape of a Russian tourist on April 28 at Morjim Beach where the accused is still at large. The 24-year-old Russian had alleged that on early Thursday morning at around 4 a.m. when she was fast asleep in her room, the hotel owner entered it using the master key and allegedly raped her.
