The South Goa district would realise the dream of water supply 24×7 soon with the public works department (PWD) set to commission the additional 100 million litre per day (MLD) water treatment plant at Selaulim later this month.
Informing the media that the trial production of treated water has commenced, PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar said that the plant would be commissioned formally on May 22 at Fatorda Ground, Margao at the hands of the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
“The plant constructed under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project will supply water to all areas from Sanguem to Mormugao taluka, except the Canacona taluka where the project work is yet to be completed,” he added.
Announcing a slew of projects under the principal JICA project, Dhavalikar said that the government by 2017 would be in a position to supply tapped water across the state 24×7. He further said that the Salcete taluka will begin to receive round the clock water supply from this month.
However, refuting reports in a section of media about a dip in the water levels in the state reservoirs, he stated that the state will not face shortfall of water till June 10.
Stating that pipeline with diameters varying between 300 mm and 1400 mm has been laid to supply water from the Selaulim water reservoir, the minister informed that Vasco would receive 90 MLD of water compared to the current supply of 65 MLD of water.
While the total project cost under the JICA project is Rs 1,200 crore, the 100 MLD plant and the subsequent pipeline laying for the water supply cost Rs 378 crore. The JICA project was to be completed by December this year, the project is expected to be completed in 2017, informed Dhavalikar.
He further said that the government has placed a target to reduce the non-revenue water (NRW) at twenty per cent which has been reduced to thirty per cent currently. The revenue of the PWD department has also increased by around 30 per cent, he informed.
