Saying no to drugs at individual level can make a big difference: Dy CM

Chief Minister Francis D’Souza said that people involved in drug trafficking are big sharks and it is difficult to fight them, but “at individual level if we say no to drugs then we can change things in a big way.”
D’Souza was speaking at a function on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking here, on Sunday.
He said that drug problem is an international phenomenon and not so easy to control; however, if every individual makes an effort to stay away from it then it can be nipped in the bud.
He said that “nowadays there are chemical drugs which are more harmful and easily available as the drug market is growing. Today, smoking, drinking, drugs have become a fashion among the youngsters”.
He added that “in a family, the elders should set an example by saying no to drinking, smoking and then only the younger members will follow it and that is how the society will change.”
Kripa foundation had organised the programme in collaboration with Narcotics Control Bureau where D’Souza was the chief guest. The guest speaker was retired vice air marshal VSM Dr Giles Gomez while the guest of honour was DySP-Mapusa and Pernem Mahesh Gaonkar. Superintendent of Narcotics Control Bureau Jitendra Ranjan was also present.
Dr Giles Gomez gave a power point presentation and explained how drugs and alcohol affect physical and mental health and how it should be controlled. On the theme of saying no to drugs, a painting competition was organised and winners were given prizes at the hands of dignitaries.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Gaonkar said that “since there is huge money involved we need to control drug menace with a strong commitment and integrity.”
He advised parents to be watchful of the habits of their children like where they spend the money, in what condition they come back home and with whom do they spend their time.
Superintendent of Narcotics Control Bureau Ranjan said that “drinking and smoking are become a social acceptances which needs to be stopped.”
Mapusa police staff, NCC cadets held two separate rallies in the town to commemorate the day. Similarly a flash mob was performed by volunteers of an NGO in collaboration with Narcotic Control Bureau at KTC bus stand Mapusa
