S Goa witnesses rise in assault cases; 55 reported in last 5 months

South Goa has witnessed 55 cases of voluntarily causing grievous hurt or voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons in the last 5 months.
Statistics show that in the year 2015 as many as 55 cases of assault were registered by various police stations in South Goa including Maina Curtorim and Margao police stations where most of these cases were registered.
The police stations registered 52 hurt cases and arrested the accused.
The Ponda police registered the highest number of 13 hurt cases in five months this year while Margao police booked 9 cases and Maina Curtorim police have booked 8 such cases, besides 5 cases were booked by Cuncolim police, 4 each by Quepem and Canacona, 3 each by Colva and Sanguem police while 2 each cases were registered by Vasco and Verna police.
1 hurt case each was registered by Mormugao and Collem police stations.
As many as 86 assault cases were registered by various police stations in South Goa including Maina-Curtorim and Margao police stations where most of the cases were registered in 2015.
A majority of 14 cases were registered at Margao, Ponda – 13, Colva – 10, Cuncolim – 9, Canacona – 8 and Quepem – 7 cases.
According to statistics available, out of 86 cases reported in South Goa from January 2015, 84 cases have been detected.
A police officer from South Goa said that in cases of causing grievous hurt, medical report is important. It was said that when a complaint of hurt is reported, a person is sent for medical examination and other formalities are carried out and later based on medical report an offence is registered.
The police said that assault cases include voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means, voluntarily causing hurt to extort property or to constrain an illegal act, causing hurt by means of poison, etc with intention to commit an offence, voluntarily causing hurt to extort confession, or to compel restoration of property, to deter public servant from his duty, voluntarily causing hurt on provocation, causing hurt by act of endangering life or personal safety of others.
The police said that these cases are booked under various sections of IPC.
An advocate said Section 323 of IPC provides punishment for voluntarily causing hurt. He said, whoever, except in the case provided for by Section 334, voluntarily causes hurt, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees, or with both.
According to statistics available, out of 86 cases reported in South Goa from January 2015, 84 cases have been detected. In the year 2014, till December 20, South Goa police stations had booked 150 cases and had detected 144 cases while in the year 2013, South Goa police stations had booked 120 cases and detected 109 cases, while in 2012, South Goa police stations had booked 118 cases and detected 110. In the year 2011, police booked 84 cases and detected 77 cases.
