With ban on fishing ending on July 31 midnight, the fresh fishing season is set to begin with just around 65-70 per cent of boats likely to venture into the sea from Cutbona jetty. However, there is uncertainty over return of workers on time and build up of possible cyclonic winds in the Arabian Sea.
The Cutbona jetty was buzzing with activity ranging from loading of nets to negotiations about auction rates amidst tight police security to prevent any untoward incident over rift within union and formation of groups.
President of Cutbona boat owners union Savio D’Silva said that, at present, around 65-70 per cent of trawlers are likely to venture into the sea on early Monday morning and some are expected to return by late in the evening. He said the weather also appears to be favourable and hoped for a good fishing season.
D’Silva said the last fishing season was not so good and was marked by several controversies. He however said that there is uncertainty about return of labourers as many boat owners had not paid the workers properly at the end of the last season.
