MAPUSA: A major fire broke out at the furniture repair workshop at Parra, causing a loss of around Rs 15- 20 lakh. The fire personnel, who were ably assisted by neighbours and workshop workers, managed to stop the fire from spreading.

According to the information provided by the Mapusa fire station, a call was received at around 12.45 p.m. wherein it was informed that   fire has broken out at the furniture repair workshop at Bhati in Parra, a residential area.

The incident took place when the workers at the workshop were working using an electrical machine.

While the machine was in use, sparks, which came out from it, triggered fire upon coming into connect with foam material, and then the flames intensified upon further coming into contact with four small barrels containing inflammable adhesive.

The fire spread out so fast that the workers did not get enough time to save any items, and they had to move out of the workshop to save their lives.

The entire workshop got engulfed in fire, and even the palm fronds of a coconut tree nearby were burnt.

The fire tenders from the Mapusa fire station arrived at the spot and soon started dousing the flames. Altogether four fire tenders were pressed into service to control the fire and stop it from spreading to nearby houses.

The fire station in-charge Bosco Ferro and assistant divisional officer Ajit Kamat also visited  the spot.

The locals extended their help to firefighters in controlling the fire.

The loss is estimated to be around Rs 15 – 20 lakh, but the exact loss will be known after the workshop owner Maqbool Sheikh submits material list to the fire station.

Sheikh is presently out of station.
