The district Collector, South Swapnil Naik on Wednesday said that directions are issued to the department of Higher Education to increase the number of counselors in colleges and to give an explanation on the ragging issue, if any.
Naik, while chairing a meeting of the anti- ragging committee, which is normally held at the beginning of the academic year in every district as per the guidelines of the apex court, stated that there were no fresh ragging cases reported to the committee during the last academic year.
“Normally, the meeting of anti -ragging committee was held at the beginning of the academic year and if required another meeting is convened. We took the review of the last meeting and it was found that most of the cases have been complied with. There was no fresh case reported this year,’’ Naik said after the half an hour meeting that was held at the collectorate building.
He said the director of Higher Education is asked to increase the number of counselors in the colleges to make it easy for students to seek guidance. It was also suggested that once the anti-ragging committees are formed in the colleges, details shall be displayed in colleges.
The members of the anti-ragging committee also showed concerned to the increase number of suicides, but the district collector clarified that they were not related to the ragging issue. Nevertheless, he suggested that it can be resolved with proper counseling to students.
Hiraj Mulla, state president of the NSUI, Remy Dias, the deputy director, department of education, Sucheta Dessai, deputy superintendent of police, Vasco, Additional Director, Ronkon Pereira were present for the meeting.
