Chief officer of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Y B Tavde said that parking space will be created at the temporary garage area by demolishing unwanted structures and removing condemned vehicles.
This comes after a report in this daily highlighting that the civic body had as many as 32 vehicles for various purposes including its latest addition, costing Rs 17 lakh, for the chairperson, but had no proper garage to house them.
Speaking to this reporter on Tuesday, Tavde said, “After a news report appeared in ‘The Navhind Times’, I Inspected the area at old market and found that it is in total mess. I have ordered the municipal engineer concerned to immediately remove the five condemned vehicles and shift them at the MMC area at Sonsoddo,’’ he said.
He said that three unused urinals will also be removed to create additional space. “This is a prime spot. We cannot afford to lose it. We have prepared an estimate to construct a road in the bandh area at old market, the site where, presently, MMC vehicles are parked,” he said, adding, the existing Tinto shed will be also changed.
The inspection, carried out by chief officer of the temporary garage area, assumes importance as the GSUDA has provided another seven rickshaws for the civic body for lifting waste. MMC is trying to accommodate these new vehicles in the shed by renovating it.
Meanwhile, Tavde said that interviews for the post of eight temporary rickshaw drivers were held on Tuesday. “Their job would be purely temporary and on contract basis,” he added.
