The education department has issued a circular to schools to appoint teachers as road safety coordinators for special training by traffic police.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (traffic), South Goa, Prabodh Shirvoiker said that at one of the meetings with the Director General of Police it was suggested that the education department should issue such a circular.
Police sources said that, accordingly, the circular has been sent to schools in South Goa. It was informed that some schools have already appointed teachers as coordinators and these teachers will be trained in traffic rules/regulations at the respective traffic cells.
Sources in zonal education office at Margao said that the circular has been issued to all heads of schools to appoint a teacher as road safety coordinator who will be imparted training by traffic police.
Some higher secondary school authorities also confirmed that they have received the circular from education department.
Some schools have already selected the teachers and the list has been sent to traffic authorities.
It may be recalled that over 500 students from schools in Margao and surrounding areas have received training in basic traffic rules.
Police said that by taking such initiatives they are creating a platform for students to interact with authorities concerned so that a good traffic culture can be created. Students were taught different manual signals to control the traffic flow.
Police said that they have conducted training sessions on safe practices to be followed on roads including use of helmets and seatbelts, ill-effects of drunken driving and driving in rash and negligent manner etc. Shirvoiker said that Margao traffic cell trained students from Salcete schools, higher secondary schools and college, besides ITI students, on traffic rules.
